WHY YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT MOLD

Spread the love

If someone in your family constantly has watery, itchy, red eyes. If your kids keep getting ear infections or “colds that never end” or chronic runny noses. Or, if you or a loved one feel exhausted, foggy, and achy for no reason doctors can find… and you have been told it is just ‘stress’, there’s a good chance the villain is mold you can’t see. Most commonly found growing in the crawl space or basement and spread through the HVAC system, this silent intruder can cause health issues in children and adults. This post is written for the sister who is worried about her brother’s family, the spouse who is being ignored, and anyone who has been told “it’s just allergies” one too many times.

How Crawl-Space Mold Becomes a Whole-House Health Problem
Crawl spaces are dark, damp, and usually full of wood and dirt — the perfect mold buffet. Once mold colonies establish themselves:
1. They release billions of microscopic spores, mycotoxin fragments, and mold gases (mVOCs).
2. Those particles are pulled upward by the natural “stack effect” (warm air rising) and by your furnace or air-conditioner actively sucking air from under the house.
3. The HVAC system then blows those compounds directly into every bedroom, living room, and kitchen through the ductwork.
The result is that you and your family are breathing low-level mold toxins 24/7 — even if the house smells fine and looks clean.

The Eye Connection: Why Watery Eyes Are Often the First Red Flag
Watery, burning, red, gritty, or chronically irritated eyes are reported by 68–82 % of people living in moldy homes (Clinical Reviews in Allergy & Immunology, 2023).

Why the eyes?
• Mold spores and mycotoxins are small enough to land directly on the conjunctiva (the clear layer over your eyeball).
• mVOCs off-gas and act like a chemical irritant the moment the furnace kicks on.
• The reaction is usually worse in the morning (spores settle overnight) and within 30–60 minutes of returning home from being outside.
If antihistamine eye drops only help for an hour or two, mold is a prime suspect.

Health Effects: Adults vs. Children
Group Common Short-Term Symptoms Serious Long-Term Risks if Exposure Continues
Adults Watery/itchy eyes, sinus pressure, headaches, fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, rashes Chronic sinusitis, new or worsening asthma, hormone disruption, CIRS (see below), increased cancer risk from certain mycotoxins
Children Constant watery eyes, ear infections, cough, nosebleeds, eczema, mouth-breathing Permanent asthma (risk ↑ 30–50 %), learning difficulties, stunted growth, rare infant lung bleeding cases

What Is CIRS and Why Should You Care?
Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is the medical term for what happens when approximately 24–28 % of people cannot naturally clear mold toxins from their body because of genetic variations (HLA-DR gene). These people develop a runaway inflammatory reaction that can include:
• Debilitating fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix
• Brain fog and memory problems (“Can’t find my words”)
• Muscle and joint pain with no injury
• Light sensitivity, blurry vision, watery eyes
• Mood swings, anxiety, temperature dysregulation
• Frequent static shocks and metallic taste in mouth
CIRS is not an allergy — it is a biotoxin illness. Once triggered, symptoms often persist even after the mold is removed unless the person receives specific medical treatment (binders, VIP spray, etc.). The longer the exposure, the harder it is to recover.

HVAC Systems: The Superhighway for Mold Toxins
Dirty or poorly sealed ductwork is one of the fastest ways mold from a crawl space or basement contaminates the entire home:
• Return air vents pull air from under the house → mold spores get sucked in.
• Condensation inside ducts (common in humid Ohio summers) allows new mold colonies to grow inside the ductwork.
• Every time the furnace or AC turns on, it sprays those toxins throughout the living space.
We regularly find homes where the crawl space has moderate mold, but the ductwork is black with Stachybotrys and Aspergillus (we have to do testing to know the specific species) — and the family’s symptoms disappear within weeks after professional duct cleaning and crawl-space remediation.
Real-Life Example (Central Ohio, 2024) A family of five called because the mom and two kids had chronic red, watery eyes and ear infections. Dad thought they were overreacting. We found heavy Chaetomium and Stachybotrys in the crawl space (can only be verified by testing) and coating the return air ducts. After sealing the crawl space, cleaning the ducts, and running HEPA/carbon air purifiers for 60 days, the children’s eye rubbing stopped in less than two weeks and the mom’s fatigue lifted dramatically. Dad finally admitted, “Okay… maybe it was the mold.” The Bottom Line is that ignoring crawl-space mold is like ignoring a slow gas leak. You might “feel okay” for years — until one day you don’t. Fixing it now is almost always cheaper than the medical bills, lost work, potential lifelong medical issues and suffering that comes later.
What You Can Do Today
1. Take a quick phone picture of the area you are concerned about and text it to a professional (we look at photos for free). Text it to Laura at 614.286.5229 and mention this article.
2. Run a simple “leave-the-house test”: Do the watery eyes clear up when everyone is away for 4–6 hours? The holidays are a good time for this. When you and your family visit others, do their symptoms clear up? If family visits your home, does anyone else complain about a smell or symptoms?
3. Schedule a professional inspection for your home and testing so you know what is going on. Text Laura at 614.286.5229 to set up an appointment.

Don’t let your children’s immune system become permanently compromised. Inspections and testing can begin the process of reclaiming you and your family’s health. Although this article specifically talks about crawl spaces, basements and HVAC systems, mold can be found anywhere. Mold is a symptom of a water issue which means any place that water can get into your house can become a breeding place for mold. Not only can mold damage your health, but the constant moisture and mold can deteriorate wood and cause damage to your home that if not caught early can become expensive to fix.
